Bulgaria's GERB Slightly Ahead of Socialists in New Poll

Bulgaria’s center-right GERB and the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) are tied in voting intentions ahead of the May 12 general elections, with GERB having a slight edge, according to a fresh poll.

The poll conducted by Gallup International suggests that some 22.8% of voters would support GERB, while the left-wingers would gather 19.9%.

The ultranationalist Ataka comes third with 5.7%, followed by the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (4.9%).

The Bulgaria for Citizens movement of former EU Commissioner Meglena Kuneva has 3.9% and still stands a chance to enter Parliament.

Former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov’s approval rating stands at 27%, while his main rival, BSP leader Sergey Stanishev is approved by 25% of responers.

The pollsters have noted that voter turnover would be crucial for determining the outcome of the May 12 elections.
The poll was conducted prior to the country's latest wiretapping scandal.

The center-right government of former PM Boyko Borisov resigned amid massive anti-poverty protests in February, prompting President Rosen Plevneliev to adjourn the Parliament, appoint a caretaker Cabinet and schedule snap elections for May 12.
