Bulgaria starts withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan

The Government has made a decision to terminate the participation of part of the Bulgarian contingent in Afghanistan in the operation of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

The withdrawal of the company for action in the defence zone of Kabul Airport will begin on March 1 and that of the team of instructors – on March 31. Bulgarian medical teams and specialists working in Herat started leaving the country on December 31, 2012.

The decision was adopted pursuant to the Council of Ministers’ strategy as of the end of 2011 for transforming the participation of the Bulgarian troops in the operation of the NATO-led international security mission in Afghanistan.

It is consistent with NATO’s political and military decisions and the processes for handing over security responsibilities to the Afghan national security forces, stated an announcement of the Government press office.
