Construction companies to receive investments of overall BGN 1.5 bn in 2012

“Construction companies will receive investments of overall  BGN1.5 bn as a result of the implementation of infrastructural projects and refurbishment of residential buildings next year,” said yesterday Minister of Regional Development Lilyana Pavlova at the opening of the Stroiko 2000 exhibition in Sofia. She explained that this was funding, allocated under Operational Programme Regional Development, which had already been agreed under approved projects. Next year, the construction industry is expected to start reviving after the crisis.

According to the Bulgarian Construction Chamber, a slight recovery in the sector can be noticed. Pavlova said that next year there would be more work for the businesses, which was guaranteed by the agreed projects. Urgent amendments to the Spatial Planning Act, aimed at facilitating the absorption of funds under the Operational Programmes, are being considered currently. Drafting of the Building Act is underway as well.

“The members of the Management Board of the Road Infrastructure Agency have already been selected,” said Lilyana Pavlova. Ilyana Zaharieva will replace Nikolina Nikolova, who became Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works. Zahrieva worked as a Director of the Constructional Engineering Division at the agency. The Minister of Regional Development added that this winter a new approach of roads maintenance would be implemented, in line with the Finnish practice. It will be initially tested on the Lyulin highway. The new system provides that payments to the contractors are remitted when the roads are clean and well maintained, and not in advance. “If the new model is successful, it would be applied to all highways, when the 4-year contracts with the companies engaged in the road maintenance expire,” explained Pavlova.
