"Duhlata" cave

1 / 7

"Duhlata" cave is the longest cave in Bulgaria and its maze is the most complex. Its name "Duhlata" is derived from the sound which the winter makes when it blows trough the entrance of the cave.

It is situated right to the village of Bosnek on the right shore of Struma river. It is 2 km west of Chuypetlovo village, Pernik is 26 km northwest and Sofia is 39 km north.

"Duhlata" is protected natural object and is declared natural landmark.

It is not only the longest cave in Bulgaria but it is also the one with the most complex maze in our country. It is located on seven levels which are interconnected. Several water streams pass trough it and then flow into one stream that goes out near the periphery of the town of Bosnek through a karst spring. There are many tunnels, galleries and incredibly beautiful halls with limestone formations, waterfalls and lakes that are filled with secondary karst formations and narrow, hard to overcome breaches between them.
About 22 cave species live inhabit it including 6 types of bats. On the seven levels of this underground maze could be seen all kinds of karts formations like stalactites, stalagmite and stalagtones . All these gorgeous forms that resulted from the water effect were named with all kind of names - "Kamennata glava" or "the Stone head", "Sintrovoto maze" or "Sintrovo basement"... One small underground lake is named "Ayazmoto".

At the moment this natural landmark could be visited by tourist groups or separate people only after permission from the town hall in Pernik.
