Katinski pyramids

The Katinski pyramids are situated in the northeast part of the village of Katina. They are 21 km north of the capital Sofia city. 

These are rock formations or land pyramids located at the southern slopes of the Sofia mountain from the west part of the Stara planina mountain. Their altitude is about 650 m. There due to erosion in the deluvial sediments, pulled off the mountain. There are differently sized, shaped and colored pyramids most of them are high and pointed. Their thin columns form peculiar statues. The nature made the formations very impressive and beautiful and built them from rocks. Many of them were crowned with stone caps, which to some extent protect them from the direct effect of rainfall. 

The base of the pyramid is colored in yellow-brown, and its top is with wine-red coloring, they have from the red sandstone. Better known are the groups in the valley of Golemiya dol. The fourth group (situated at the bottom) in the past was an impressive sand composition more than 30 m high.
In recent decades, however, there are processes that prevent erosion. The artificial pond at the end of the gorge and the natural reforestation in the region reduce both the size and the number of pyramids.
The area still offers suitable conditions for teaching practice and picnics and walking in the nature. 

These interesting formations are declared a natural landmark in 1962 in order to be preserved.

The Katinskite pyramids are phenomenon are very popular among the people that like nature for there are in convenien proximity to the capital. 

Transportation 

The drive to Katina village takes just 30-40 minutes (from the center of Sofia to the village). Another option is the regular route taxi. In addition to the many signs to the landmark, one of the streets that leads to it is named after it. 

Accommodation 

In Katina there is no place for accommodation but the proximity to the capital offers many other convenient options.
