Lake Shabla

Shabla Lake is a protected area in northeastern Bulgaria. It is about 5 km from the town of Shabla, 18 km from the border between Bulgaria and Romania and about 530 km from Sofia.

The name Shabla lake is most often given to two adjacent coastal lakes type firth - Shabla lake and Ezerets lake. They are connected by an artificial canal and separated from the sea by a narrow strip of sand dunes.

The total area of ​​the protected terrain covers 5,312,000 sq m, and part of it falls within the government residence Shabla.

Shabla Lake is semi-salted and lies on 4-5 m sand accumulated on rich peat - evidence of a long marsh period. Its shores are almost completely overgrown with reeds and covered with water lilies. The lake is a refuge for endangered species Rezhest kladium, Burduche and Byala vodna liliya /white water lily/. On the other hand it is rich in fish. There are 23 species of fish, seven of them are included in the Red Book of Bulgaria.

Shabla Lake is in the list of important bird areas in Europe. Together with Durankulak lake, it is part of the Via Pontica, one of the main routes of migratory birds on the continent.
In the protected area neste species such as the Livadniat dardavets and Belookata potapnitsa. In autumn and winter can be seen Tranoopashata potapnitsa, Kadroglav Pelican, Malak Cormorant. During the migration of birds in the lake winter up to 30,000 Greater White-fronted Geese. Another interesting fact is that the Shabla lake along with Durankulak provides shelter during the winter of 80-90% of the world population of Red-breasted Geese.
The number of bird species found in the protected area is 260 and 70 of them are included in the Red Book of Bulgaria.

Transport

The lake can be reached in several ways because of its special location. The easiest one passes through the town of Shabla on the way to the homonymous camping. There are two exits before the gate of the residence (Yacheolu and Periloto).

Accommodation

If you wish to visit Lake Shabla you can rent a room in one of the guest houses in the city, or stay in the hotel complex of Ezerets village, located 5 km north of Shabla. The complex has a restaurant with a summer garden, offering specialties of local cuisine.
There are bungalows on the beach in the Shabla camp for those who want to enjoy the tranquility and the beautiful beach.
