Historical - archaeological preserve "Shumen Fortress"
The Shoumen fortress is 3 km away from the center of Shoumen. The history of the fortress is revealed in the exhibition of the specialized museum near the fortress. It is very well preserved and is one of the major tourist sights in the town. According to the archeologists it was built in four stages in the Early and Late Antiquity, and later it was expanded and improved in the Early and Late Middle Ages.

History:


During the Avars and Slavs invasion the fortress was destroyed. The Bulgarian khan Omurtag (814 – 831) restores the fortress again. In 11 th century the fortress was conquest by Byzantine

Rising three kilometers west of the city of Shumen is the Shumen Fortress which has existed more than 3200 years. During early and late middle ages the Shumen Fortress was Bulgarian maintained and played an important role in the history. During 1444, bout the time of the crusade march of Vladislav III Yagelo, the fortress was destroyed and burned down. The Fortress is one of the most explored archaeological sites in the country.

On the territory of the region of Shumen many cultural, natural, architectural and historical monuments and landmarks are placed, which are loved and preferred places to be visited not only by the local inhabitants, but by our guests from the country and abroad. Culture plays an important role in Shumen and in its region. The cultural life in Shumen helps to define the importance of Bulgarian customs and heritage, and these traditions are preserved in our unique region. Even with its future accession into the EU, Shumen has managed to embrace globalization, while at the same time not forgetting the strong historical foundation that helped to make the region what it is today.

Museum:

The fortress and the cultural architecture, homes and thousands of movable monuments bear record of the diverse functions during the different periods, predominantly during the time of the second Bulgarian kingdom. Today the Shumen fortress is exhibited as an open-air museum.
