"St. Nicholas the Miracle Maker" Church

1 / 4

The church was build with the money donated by a Russian citizen, born in Varna. According to his will the sum of 50 000 rubles had to be used for the making of a church named after St. Nicholas.
The construction of the church started in 1859 and was completed 11 years later.
The chronicles provide information that since the year of 1906 the church was served by Bulgarian priests. After the Greek mitropolit in Varna Policarp died, mitropolit Neofit was assigned. The Bulgarians didn't like that - to see Greek priest serving the churches, long after the Liberty has come. The day the new mitropolit arrived the entire city, along with the "Rodolyubetz" (meaning "patriot") society gathered together to express their protest. The protest caused big turbulence. The bells started to tall, the Bulgarians entered the church and a priest named St. Ganchev served the first service in a Church-Slavonic language.
