The Aquarium was built in Varna in 1912 by the idea of Tzar Ferdinand.

Its exceptionally original façade combines the bas-relief of a huge shell and some of the most popular representatives of the Black Sea fauna.

The Central Hall of the Aquarium reveals a magnificent collection of freshwater and marine fauna, represented in their natural environment. In separate halls nearby there are expositions representing the flora, the fauna and the unique characteristics of the Black Sea.

In the other two exposition halls one could see prepared sea animals and the migration of fish, to acquainted with the food chain in the sea waters, the structure and the special features of the Black Sea.

The rich collection of mollusks, mussels, clams, sea-weed and micro-organisms is very interesting.

There is also a library available with more than 30 000 scientific and specialized books, textbooks, periodicals in the field of marine biology, hydrochemistry, oceanography, ichthyology, fishing and fishing industry, maricultures, aquaristics etc. Unique old books and maps, printed in the 19th century are kept in the library, as well.
