Pobitite kamani are rock formations, located 18 km away from Varna. They are situated on both sides of the road Varna-Sofia, around villages of Slanchevo, Banovo and Strashimirovo and Devnya.

Geological phenomenon Pobitite kamani is more than 50 million years, covers an area about 70 sq. km.

Hundreds of limestone, sand formations, some of which reach a height of 11 meters and a diameter of 3 m, are distributed in 14 small and larger groups.

The biggest of these is Dikilitashkata (Central) group, which occupies a band of length 810 meters and a width of 115 meters along the road E-70. Since the road is part of the European road network, natural phenomenon Pobitite kamani is increasing popularity as a tourist attraction of international repute.

Internal ground forces, the wind and rain have given some of the stone columns fantastic shapes. Part of them are entirely hollow inside, as a result of erosion, they are filled with sand and high carbonate content.

And while Pobitite kamani area resembles a desert, it is home to many rare species of flora and fauna.
Not only, the 114 species of birds and several species of animalsthat live there, but here is the habitat of four endangered, 2 threatened and 8 protected plant species in Bulgaria.

This is one reason why in 1937 natural phenomenon Pobitite kamani became the first officially registered and protected by state landmark in Bulgaria.

There are lots of hypotheses and theories about the emergence and formation of the Pobitite kamani, situated near Varna.

In 1855 the English geologist Sirat examine them and made the first engraving.

Previously, the military correspondent of the Russian general Dibich - Victor Teplyakov makes his description and attempt to decipher their origin in 1828-1828.

A little later in 1854 an Englishman William Hamilton was working on the theories of the formation of the Pobitite kamani.

After him geologists George goldsmiths and Franz Toula, and Prof. Bakalov.

According to one of the newest theories about Pobitite kamani, they are considered to be microbial-carbonate columns which have arisen in the bottom of ancient seas.
