The St. Athanasius Church

1 / 4

The St. Athanasius Church is located in an immediate proximity to the Roman Therms in the city of Varna. It used to be a Bishop's Church. It was built on the remains of a small church with the same name that was burnt down in 1836.
In 1961 by order of the local authorities the church was turned into a museum for old-time icons.
In cooperation with the Art Gallery an exhibition of ecclesiastical icon-paintingof the Revival period has been organized.
The church itself is very interesting for its frescoes and icons, for its carved altar and Bishop's throne. There is a collection of stamps and lithographies, church books and canonnics from the Bulgarian Revival.
