landmarks

  • Tervel Museum of History was established in 1986 and is one of the most remarkable landmarks in the town and in the municipality. The three expositions it comprises are presented in a manner aiming to get the visitors acquainted with the oldest history, the Middle Ages and the period of 18th - 19th century. The most intriguing exhibit is the 3 500-old skeleton of a young man revealed in a Thracian necropolis located between the villages Orlyak and Zarnevo.
  • The canyon of "Suha Reka" /meaning "dry river" in Bulgarian/ - is a territory very different from what one would imagine considering the common relief of the municipality. The river is surrounded by rock formations creating a scenery much like the one to be seen in American westerns. The banks of the river are natural nesting grounds for the cormorants, the swampy areas are preferred by Herons and Bustards. The woods surrounding the canyon are abounding in game. The caves in the area are inhabited by 12 various kinds of bats. The ridges of the peninsula cut into the river are natural habitats for rare species of plants, rodents and insects. The most impressive, though, is the variety of bird species. Via Pontica the bird's migration route to the south is passing above Suha Reka which is the reason why many rare and protected bird species may be observed there.
