Blagun is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of the municipality of Krumovgrad, Kardzhali Region.

It is located at about 31 km south-east of Krumovgrad, 78 km in the same direction of the regional center Kardzhali and about 319 km south of the capital Sofia city. Blagun is located at about 9 km from the national border with Greece.

The village is located in the Eastern Rhodopes, in a muontainous, hilly area at an altitude about 400 m. The climate is Mediterranean which determines the relatively mild winter and the hot, long summer.

The population is about 38 people.

Blagun has relatively good infrastructure, it has electricity and water supply systems as well, there is bus transport that connects it with the regional and the municipality centers. The village is located in the close proximity of one of the main thoroughfares - transport corridor #9 Kardzhali - Makaza - Aleksandrupolis.

Medical care can be obtained in the village of Avren /9 km south-west of Blagun/. The nearest elementary school and kindergarten are also there. The nearest secondary school and multiprofile hospital are located in the town of Krumovgrad.

Stockbreeding is well developed in the region and tobacco has provided the livelihood of the population for years.

 

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

The landmark Rock tomb - sanctuary near the village of Rogach is located 28 km north-west of Blagun. The site is revered by local people as sacred and is also known as Guyo or Kuyo. It is located on a rock on the right bank of the River Krumovitsa. There are two small deep holes on the rocks which remind of human feet. Locals call the latter "The steps of Ali" (a Muslim saint).

Near the village of Chernichevo /6 km in the south-east/ The White River can be seen - the first in the Eastern Rhodopes to be declared a part of the ecological network "NATURA 2000". The unique river forms different shapes called "The meandres of the White River" troughout its course.

The protected area "Dzhevele" situated near the village of Perunika /34 km in the north/ is also an interesting site. The only existing in the Eastern Rhodopes founding of the protected species Turkish hazel is located here.

The "Dzhevele" area can be reached by a tourist route starting from the village of Rogach, through the village of Slivarka /33 km in the north/ where one can visit the micro-dams "Slivarka 1"and "Slivarka 2" and reaches the village of Chal /40 km in the same direction/ where you can find the "Koyunonlaru Dzhamisi" mosque, believed to be the oldest mosque in the Eastern Rhodopes.
