Tsarevets is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of Kardzhali Municipality, Kardzhali Region.

In Bulgaria there are three more villages bearing the same name - in the municipality of Svishtov, Veliko Tarnovo Region, in Mezdra municipality, Vratsa Region and in Dobrich municipality, Dobrich Region.

It is located at 4 km north of Kardzhali, 48 km south-west of Haskovo, 69 km in the same direction of Dimitrovgrad and 244 km south-east of the capital Sofia.

Tsarevets is situated in the outskirts of Kardzhali in the Eastern Rhodopes at an altitude of about 350 m. The climate is transitional-Mediterranean, with hot summer and mild winter.

The population is approximately 215 people.

Tsarevets is provided with electricity and water and has relatively good infrastructure. There is a town hall here. Schools, hospitals and kindergartens you will find in Kardzhali. Regular bus transport connects the village to Karzdhali.

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

In Kardzhali you can visit:

  • The Regional museum of history in the town of Kardzhali;
  • Art Gallery "Stanka Dimitrova" with an exposition of over 2 000 works - precious collections of icons and Renaissance prints, paintings and sculpture;
  • Architectural complex "Old Town" consisting of old houses, the most famous of which are "Kerimov House", "House of the Architects", etc

Only 8 km south-east of Tsarevets, in the village of Zimzelen, is situated the rock phenomenon The Stone wedding - group of natural rock formations of figures with height up to 10 m, resembling wedding-guests. The site is natural landmark. It could be reached by a marked ecological path as well.

In the village of Beli plast /22 km north-east/ is situated the natural phenomenon Stone mushrooms. The local people call it Mantarkaya. The rock formations resembling mushrooms are product of rhyolitic volcano tuffs. The area was declared natural landmark in 1974.

High in the rocks, about 24 km south-east of the village of Tsarevets, rises the archeological complex of 'Perperikon'. It is claimed the complex used to be a sanctuary of Dionysus (the god of Wine, Theatre and Ecstasy in Greek mythology).
