Chal is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of the municipality of Krumovgrad, Kardzhali Region.

It is located about 14 km north-east of Krumovgrad, about 62 km south-east of the town of Kardzhali and approximately 303 km from the capital Sofia city.

Chal is located in a mountainous area at an altitude about 450 m. The climat is transitive - Mediterranean, which determines the mild winter and long, hot summer.

The population is about 40 people.

Chal has relatively good infrastructure - most of the streets are paved, the village has electricity and water supply systems, all mobile operators have coverage. The village is served by bus transport.

The village of Chal is located on one of the busiest roads in Bulgaria - II 59 Momchilgrad - Krumovgrad - Ivaylovgrad, which is one of Southern Bulgaria’s major thoroughfares.

There is s mosque in the  village. Primary schools you can find in the neighboring villages of Guliyka and Belopoltsi, respectively 9 km in the south-west and 6 km in the north-east, and the nearest secondary school is located in Krumovgrad. There is a kindergarten in the village of Belopoltsi as well. Specialized medical care town can be obtained on the territory of the municipal town.

 

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

In the village of Chal you can see the oldest mosque in the Eastern Rhodopes.

The area Ilia's field is located 19 north-east of Chal, in the village of Glumovo. A memorial to honour the 40000 Thracian refugees who died there, was built. The memorial consists of a chapel, a monument and a fountain and is used annually as the location of the National Youth Thracian fest - Thracian child's day, held every year on 1st June - the International Day for the Protection of Children.

In the neighboring village of Rogach / 10 km south of Chal / is situated the Rock tomb - sanctuary, locatedon a cliff on the right bank of the River Krumovitsa. This archaeological site is revered by locals as sacred as there are the two small holes on the rocks resembling human steps, which are called “The steps of Ali" (a Muslim saint).

A lot of sites of importance for the historical and cultural heritage of the region can be visited in Krumovgrad as well:

  • The mosque "Seytlyar dzhamisi", believed to be one of the main reasons for the existence of the town and surrounding villages. 
  • A museum collection, including over 2000 exhibits, located in a house , declared to be a cultural monument. 
  • The church "St. Ivan Rilski", built in 1934 - also an architectural site.
