Chernoochene is a village situated in the Central part of Southern Bulgaria. It is administrative centre of Chernoochene Municipality, Kardzhali region.

It is located 14 km north from town of Kardzhali, 32 km south-west from town of Haskovo, 61 km south-east from town of Asenovgrad and 240 km in the same direction from city of Sofia.

Its population is approximately 320 people.

The village spreads out the Eastern Rhodopes, at 564 m above sea level. The relief is mountainous and the climate characterizes with hot summer and mild winter.

Chernoochene is a well-developed village with good road infrastructure. Electricity, water, telephone net and Internet are provided.

It comprises a municipal building, a polyclinic, health services, a secondary school, a kindergarten, a community centre, a library, a mosque and shops.

The village is set in the beginning of the Rhodopes. Here the most important roads to the central part of the country and the Bulgarian-Greek border pass.

The main means of living of the population is agriculture. People are specialized in stock-breeding and tailoring.

Tourism

The region is rich of many natural landmarks attracting tourists from the whole country. One of them is Kardzhali Dam. It is a perfect place for recreation, sun-bathing, fishing and water sports. The dam is one of the biggest in Bulgaria.

The medieval complex of Perperikon is a very famous landmark as well. It is supposed to be a Thracian sanctuary of God of Dionysus. The complex is part of the 100 Tourists Sites of Bulgaria.
