Gabrovo is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of Chernoochene Municipality, Kardzhali region.

In Bulgaria there are two more settlements with the same name - the regional and municipla center of Gabrovo municipality, Gabrovo Region and in the municipality of Blagoevgrad, Blagoevgrad region.

Gabrovo is located 9 km north-west of the village of Chernoochene, 24 km in the same diresction of Kardzhali, 37 km south-west of Haskovo and approximately 219 km south-east of the capital Sofia city.

The village of Gabrovo spreads in the Eastern Rhodopes, at an altitude of about 576 m. The relief is mountainous and the climate characterizes with warm summer and cold winter. Gabrovo is set on a main road connecting Asenovgrad /52 km north-west/ and Kardzhali. There is regular bus transport to the neighbouring villages.

Gabrovo is the second largest village in the municipality of Chernoochene with population of approximately 590 people.

The village's infrastructure is settled with partly asphalted and lighted streets. There are water and electricity supply systems. Gabrovo comprises a mayor viceroyalty, a primary school "Hristo Botev", a community center "Druzhba", a mosque and a grocery store. The nearest kindergarten is situated in the village of Komuniga /5 km in the west/. Medical care for the population is provided by one GP and the nearest health center is in Chernoochene.

TOURISM

Near the village of Gabrovo, close to the village Daskalovo /7 km in the south-east/ you will find two microdams  -Daskalovo 1 Dam and Daskalovo 2 Dam which are suitable for fishing.

In the village of Pchelarovo /10 km in the south-east/ you can visit a few sites:

  • The church of St. Paraskeva, known among local people as "St. Petka". It features an original bell tower with six-wall dome with cross over round columns. Near the church is the old monastery school. In close proximity is the big fountain with a small chapel in front of it. The church is operational and is announced to be a monument of culture. 
  • The medieval fortress in Gradishteto area located near the road leading to Haskovo. The fortress is a local monument of culture as well. It is easily accessible and is a pleasant place to visit.
  • An ethnographic museum with a bit collection - local costumes, tools, etc.

In the village of Zhenda /15 km in the south-west/, in the Asar Kaya area you will find the remains of a Thracian fortress and sanctuary located on a high rock terrace with a magnificent view to the region.
