Gorna kula is a village in southern Bulgaria. It is part of the municipality of Krumovgrad, Kardzhali Region.

It is located at about 8 km north-west of the town of Krumovgrad, about 45 km south-east of the regional center Kardzhali and approximately 286 kilometers in the same direction of the capital Sofia city.

The village is situated in a mountainous area at an altitude of 450 m It is part of the transitional-continental climate zone. Winters are relatively mild and summers are long and hot.

The population of Gorna kula is about 308 people.

The village has a relatively good infrastructure - most of the streets are paved, the village has electricity and water supply systems, all mobile operators have coverage, the village is serviced by regular bus transport.

The village of Gorna kula is located on one of the main thoroughfares in Southern Bulgaria - II 59 Momchilgrad - Krumovgrad - Ivaylovgrad which connects the municipality of Krumovgrad with the neighboring municipalities, the regional center Kardzhali and the national transport network.

There is a mosque in the village and a primary school with adjoined kindergarten group. The nearest secondary school is located Krumovgrad. Medical assistance cen be obtained in the town as well. There are two medical centers in Krumovgrad – one multiprofile hospital for active treatment and a medical center.

 

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

The River Krumovitsa passes in the close proximity of the village. The middle course of the river in the area between Gorna kula and the River Dushan dere is part of the important ornithological area "Krumovitsa". There are several rock formations with different cuts in them along the river which are the evidence that the valley has been inhabited since ancient times. There are such complexes near the village of Gorna kula as well.

In the area of the neighboring village of Vransko / 6 km in the south-east / in the area Keremid cheli, can be visited a prehistoric settlement related to the culture Karanovo II / middle Neolithic - 5 thousand BC / and in the village of Chaika / 10 km in the west / rock niches associated with ritual activity were found.

The medieval nave church built of hewn stones soldered with plaster in the central part of Krumovgrad might also be of interest to the tourists.

The mosque "Seytlyar dzhamisi" is also a site with importance for the cultural heritage of the town. It was built on the foundations of an old wooden mosque from XVI - XVIII century and is believed to be the main reason for the existance of Krumovgrad and the villages that surround it. The friday meetings of people there were the reason for trade relations to arise, for commercial stores and, later, even house to appear.

A museum collection which includes over 2000 exhibits connected with the cultural and historical heritage of the municipality of Krumovgrad is located in a monument-building in the town.
