Guliya is a village in sothern Bulgaria. It is part of the municipality of Krumovgrad, Kardzhali Region.

The village is located 8 km southeast of Krumovgrad and respectively 56 and 296 km in the same direction of the regional center Kardzhali and the capital Sofia city. The village of Golyamo kamenyane is located 3 km in the south-east.

Guliya is located in a mountainous area at an altitude about 490 m. The climate is Meditteranean, the winter is mild and the summer - hot. The River Krumovitsa passes near the village.

The population is about 70 people.

Guliya has relatively good infrastructure - the roads are in good condition, it has water and electricity supply, regular bus transport connects it with the municipality center Krumovgrad.

The nearest community center and elemenary school are in the village of Golyamo kamenyane and the nearest kindergarten is the town of Krumovgrad. One can obtain medical assistance again there - in the general hospital or the health center there. Secondary school you can find in the municipal town as well.

 

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

The landmark Rock tomb - sanctuary near the village of Rogach is located only 7 km north-west of Guliya. The tomb is revered by local people as sacred. It is located on a rock on the right bank of the River Krumovitsa. There are two small deep holes on the rocks which remind of human feet. Locals call the latter "The steps of Ali" (a Muslim saint).

The White River can be seen 12 km in the south-east. The river is the first in the Eastern Rhodopes to be declared a part of the ecological network "NATURA 2000". The river forms different shapes called "The meandres of the White River" troughout its course.

The church "St. Nikolai" in the near village of Avren /13 km south-east of Guliya/ is also interesting as well as the chapel built on the place of the demolished church in the area of Selishteto and the annual traditional fair in Avren.

In Krumovgrad you can also see:

  • the remains of a fortifying wall, part of the foundations of a fortified village;
  • the mosque "Seytlyar dzhamisi", considered to be one of the main reasons for the existence of the town and the villages that surround it;
  • a museum collection of over 2000 exhibits, located in a house declared a cultural monument.
