TOURIST SITES

Between the villages of Neofit Bozvelievo /2 km north-east/ and Lale is situated a ritual complex of 11 rock niches on two levels. Two of them /called the acoustic niches/ have a very interesting feature in the production of sound to echo back in a special way to the standing in front of the niche.

In the village of Tatul situated about 9 km north of Lale is located the archaelogical landmark "Orpheus' sanctuary" in the Kaya basha area /translated from Turkish - Stone head/. The sanctuary was started in the late Bronze Age. Archaeologists believe that 3,500 years ago the rock near Tatul was revered as heroon - sanctuary of the deified after his death Thracian king. Orpheus' sanctuary was known throughout the world both before and after Christ. Upon the adoption of Christianity in the Rhodope Mountains at the end of IV century the rich complex was converted into a secular estate. It existed up to XI-XII century, when it became the property of the famous Byzantine Palaiologos family to become today one of the most remarkable architectural sites of our times.

The natural phonomenon "Petrified forest" located in the settlement of the village of Raven is an interesting site. It is located in a deep valley called by locals "Gabaz dere." The site was declared protected in the "natural landmark" category. It represents fossilized trees and is about 30 million years old. During the summer months, the "Petrified Forest" is often visited by biologists, naturalists and eco-tourists.

"Borovets" reserve, situated also near the village of Raven, is one of the four reserves in the Eastern Rhodopes and is of national importance. It was declared a protected site in order to protect the easternmost natural habitat of pine. The flora is fairly well studied - pine, oak vergiliev, oak, wild pear, apple, prickly juniper and others, as well as fauna, some of which are in Bulgaria's Red Book and are protected in European and world scale.
