Madrets is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of Kardzhali Municipality, Kardzhali Region.

There is one more village in Bulgaria with the same name - in the municipality of Galabovo, Stara Zagora Region.

Madrets is located 18 km north-east of Kardzhali, 33 km south of Haskovo, 100 km south-west of Svilengrad and 262 km south-east of the city of Sofia. Regular bus and railroad transport connects it to the neighbouring towns and villages.

The village is set in the Eastern Rhodopes at an altitude of about 250 m. The relief is mountainous and the climate region characterizes with hot summer and mild winter.

The population is approximately 117 people.

The village's infrastructure is well-developed - asphalt and lighted streets. Madrets is provided with electricity and water and comprises a guest house with a restaurant, a mosque, a petrol station and markets. In the village of Chiflik /2 km in the south-west/ you will find a post office, a primary school, a kindergarten, a community center as well as a GP. Dentist you can find in the village of Perperek /3 km in the south-east/. The nearest hospitals are in Kardzhali.

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

Between the areas of the villages of Madrets and Most /8 km in the north/ you can visit quite interesting rock formations resembling mushrooms. Their form is much like the one of the Stone mushrooms near the village of Beli plast /18 km in the north-west/.

Near the village of Madrets you will find a microdam offering sports fishing (for carp and grass carp).

At the settlement of the village of Chiflik, in 'Klise basha' area, a beautiful church was discovered during important excavations. The church was part of the regional centre and bishop's residence, with direct visual connection with 'Perperikon' complex. The site is being prepared for tourist visits, as an inseparable part of the complex, which is located only 7 km north-west of Madrets, near the village of Gorna krepost.

About 10 km away is located Studen kladenets Dam - perhaps the most picturesque artificial lake in the Rhodopes. The water of Studen kladenets Dam is used for fish breeding and water sports (rowing, water wheels).
