Malkoch is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is located in the municipality of Kirkovo, Kardzhali Region.

The village is located 42 km east of Kirkovo, 67 km south-east of Kardzhali and about 308 km south-east of the capital Sofia cityKrumovgrad is located 38 km in the north-east and the village of Tihomir - only 7 km in the south-west.

It is situated in an area with hilly and foothill relief at an altitude of 561 meters. Varbitsa River passes through the village. The climate is transitional-Mediterranean, winters are relatively mild and summers are long and hot. 

Here live about 285 people.

The village has a relatively good infrastructure, the main streets are paved and lighted, there are electricity and water supply systems. All mobile operators have coverage. Regular bus transport connects the village with the municipal center and the neighbouring villages.

The village of Malkoch is situated only 12 km from the national border with Greece and 17 km from European road E-85, part of transeuropean transport corridor №9 - an important thoroughfare with major contribution to the economic development of the region.

There are a functioning town hall here. In the village of Tihomir you can find the nearest primary school, community center and a kindergarten. Besides,you will find a  sewing workshop there as well. Medical care for the population is provided by one GP and one dentist again in Tihomir. General hospital you can find in the town of Krumovgrad.

 

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

In the close proximity of the village of Tihomir you can see two bridges from Roman times, built by local craftsmen with perfect command of the art of stone masonry. In the area of the village you can also visit 4 medieval Bulgarian cemetrieswith jewelry, vessels. etc.

In the village of Benkovski, about 50 km in the west, you can see a few sites:

  • the renovated mosque in the center of the village where Muslims from all over the region gather to pray;
  • the venerable oak, over 200 years old, declared protected;
  • a rocky area, where the elements have for centuries carved the huge stones in a variety of bizarre rock forms of animals and plants, the most interesting of which are "The Crocodile", "The Mushroom", "Lion's Head", etc.
