Murgovo is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of Kardzhali Municipality, Kardzhali Region.

It is located at 19 km north-east of Kardzhali, 37 km south-west of Haskovo and 243 km south-east of the capital  Sofia.

Murgovo is situated in the Eastern Rhodopes at an altitude of about 262 m. The climate is transitional-Mediterranean and is characterised with hot summer and mild winter.

The population is approximately 295 people.

The village is provided with electricity and water and has relatively good infrastructure. There are a mosque, a town hall and a grocery store here. Post office, primary school, kindergarten, community center as well as a GP you can find in the village of Chiflik /3 km in the south/. The nearest hospitals are in Kardzhali.

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

At the eastern end of the village of Gorna krepost /3 km in the north/ you can visit the Alian tomb of Hizir baba. According to the beliefs of the local people, a reputable Alian saint was buried here.

At about 3 km north-west of the village of Murgovo, rises the archeological complex of  'Perperikon'. It is claimed the complex used to be a sanctuary of Dionysus (the god of Wine, Theatre and Ecstasy in Greek mythology).

About 10 km away is located Studen kladenets Dam - perhaps the most picturesque artificial lake in the Rhodopes. It is the second one (after Kardzhali Dam) along Arda River. It starts right after the town. The water of Studen kladenets Dam is used for fish breeding and water sports (rowing, water wheels).

The natural phenomenon Stone mushrooms is located about 13 km north-east of the village of Murgovo, close to the village of Beli plast, on the road connecting Haskovo and Kardzhali. The local people call it Mantarkaya. The rock formations resembling mushrooms are product of rhyolitic volcano tuffs. The area was declared natural landmark in 1974.
