Ostrovitsa is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of Kardzhali Municipality, Kardzhali Region.

It is located 5 km south-east of Kardzhali, 16 km north of Momchilgrad, 284 km south-west of Burgas and 250 km south-east of Sofia

The village is situated in a mountainous region, in the Eastern Rhodopes, on the very bank of Studen kladenets Dam. Its altitude is about 227 m. Summer here is hot and the winter - mild.

The population is approximately 200 people occupied mainly with tobacco-growing, vegetable-growing and stock breeding.

There is a community center here. The nearest schools and hospitals are in the town of Kardzhali. Bus transport connects the village to the regional town. There is a station of the railroad line Kardzhali - Podkova nearby.

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

About 2 km south of Ostrovitsa, near the village of Vishegrad, is located the medieval fortress Vishegrad. It occupies a rocky top above Studen kladenets Dam of 562 sq. m. The fortress is easily accessible and convenient for visits. Rough road leads to it. Across the dam is visible the other fortress in the region - Monyak next to village of Shiroko pole.

Studen kladenets Dam is used mainly for fish-breeding and water-wheeling. It is one of the most beautiful in the country. The game breeding stations of Zhenda, Bolyartsi and Studen kladenets organize hunting tourism.

  • The medieval complex of Perperikon /27 km north-east/ which is one of the 100 Tourist Sites of Bulgaria;
