Pelin is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of the municipality of Krumovgrad, Kardzhali Region.

It is located about 7 km east of Krumovgrad, about 55 km south-east of the town of Kardzhali and approximately 296 km in the same direction from the capital Sofia city.

Pelin is located in a mountainous area at an altitude about 400 m. It is part of the transitive - Mediterranean climat zon. The winter is mild and the summer - long and hot.

The village of Pelin is located on one of the busiest roads in Bulgaria - II 59 Momchilgrad - Krumovgrad - Ivaylovgrad, which is one of Southern Bulgaria’s major thoroughfares.

The population is about 520 people.

The village has relatively good infrastructure - the streets are paved, there are electricity and water supply systems. All mobile operators have coverage. Regular bus transport connects Pelin with the surrounding villages.

There is a functioning kindergarten in the village. The nearest primary school is located in the neighboring village of Guliyka / 3 km in the south / and the nearest secondary school is located in the municipal center Krumovgrad. Specialized medical care town can be obtained on the territory of the municipal town as well.

 

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

Near the village, on a steep hill named Dzheneve, a medieval fortress was found. Around the fortress were found coins, fragments of medieval pottery and a couple of iron objects. Under the fort there is a perennia spring.

In the neighboring village of Rogach / 3 km south-west of Pelin / is situated the Rock tomb - sanctuary, locatedon a cliff on the right bank of the River Krumovitsa. This archaeological site is revered by locals as sacred as there are the two small holes on the rocks resembling human steps, which are called “The steps of Ali" (a Muslim saint).

The close proximity of the village to the municipal town allows visiting a lot of sites of importance for the historical and cultural heritage of the region. In the center of the town one can see the remains of a wall, part of the foundations of a fortified settlement.

The mosque "Seytlyar dzhamisi" is also an interesting site. The mosque was built in 1855 on the foundations of an old wooden mosque from XVI - XVIII century and is believed to be one of the main reasons for the existence of the town and surrounding villages.

A museum collection, including over 2000 exhibits, divided into departments Archaeology, History and Ethnography, is located in a house , declared to be a cultural monument.

The church "St. Ivan Rilski", built in 1934, is also an architectural site.
