Penyovo is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of Kardzhali Municipality, Kardzhali Region.

It is located 9 km north-west of Kardzhali, 49 km south-west of Haskovo, 279 km in the same direction of Burgas and 245 km south-east of Sofia.

The village is situated in the Eastern Rhodopes, at an altitude of 617 m. The area is hilly with beautiful panoramic views. Arda River and Kardzhali Dam are situated in close proximity. The climate is transitional-continental. Summers are hot and winters - mild.

The population is approximately 160 people.

The village is provided with water and electricity and has good transport connections. There are a town-hall, a grocery store and a cafe here. The nearest post office, health center, community center, school and kindergartne are in the neighbouring village of Enchets /4 km south/. The nearest hospitals are in Kardzhali.

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

Near the village of Dazhdovnitsa /2 km in the west/ you can visit several interesting rock niches. They are hewn in monolithic rocks, along with original impressive figures. They are visible by the road, but the access is very difficult.

The new stone art house in Dazhdovnitsa /also known as Slipper house/ is also intersting. It is constructed over the old stone remains of an 100 years old stone building. Part of the area is equipped as art hostel. The yard is turned into an open-air gallery. The 100-year old stone building is an attractive art house showing exhibitions and interesting programmes by young artists from around the world.

The cult complex 'The cave Utroba' is situated about 8 km in the north-west. The temple-womb is an ancient Thracian sanctuary, set in difficult of access area. It is a cave that resembles a womb. At the far end of the cave is the sacred altar, where according to the Thracian beliefs the underground goddess mother conceives the sun god.

Kardzhali Dam is located only 2 km in the south and is a perfect place for yachting, surfing and swimming. The dam is convenient for fishing as well, due to its variety of fish.

About 29 km north-east is the archeological complex of 'Perperikon' - one of the 100 National Tourist Sites.
