Skalna glava is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of Kardzhali Municipality, Kardzhali Region.

It is located 16 km north-west of Kardzhali, 45 km south-west of Haskovo, 275 km in the same direction of Burgas and 241 km south-east of the capital Sofia.

The village is situated in the Eastern Rhodopes at an altitude of about 408 m. The region is hilly with beautiful panoramic views. Arda River and Kardzhali Dam are situated in the close proximity. The climate here is transitional-continental. Summers are warm and winters - soft.

The population is approximately 135 people.

The village is provided with water and electricity and has relatively good infrastructure. There is a grocery store here. Post office, primary school, kindergarten, GP and a community center you will find in the village of Kostino /4 km in the north/. The nearest hospitals are in town of Kardzhali. 

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

Near the village of Dazhdovnitsa /4 km south-west/ you can visit several interesting sites:

  • Rock niches, hewn in monolithic rocks, along with original impressive figures. They are visible by the road, but the access is very difficult.
  • The cult complex 'The cave Utroba' - an ancient Thracian sanctuary, set in difficult of access area. It represents a cave resembling a woman womb. At the temple's bottom is situated a sacred altar, where according to the Thracian beliefs, the underground goddess mother conceives the sun god.
  • The new stone art house also known as Slipper house, constructed over the remains of an 100-year-old stone building. Part of the area is equipped as art hostel. The yard is turned into an open-air gallery. The 100-year-old stone building is an attractive art house showing exhibitions and interesting programmes by young artists from around the world.

Kardzhali Dam is a perfect place for yachting, surfing and swimming. The dam is convenient for fishing as well, due to its variety of fish.

About 30 km north-east is located the archeological complex of 'Perperikon' - one of the 100 National Tourist Sites.
