Town of Aytos is an administrative centre of Aytos municipality, Burgas region.
It is situated 30 km north-west from Burgas city, about 20 km east from Karnobat, 45 km west from Sunny Beach resort and about 350 km east from Sofia city.
The town is located on the riverside of Aytovska river, at the foot of Balkan mountain, on about 95 m altitude.
The climate is influenced by the Black sea. It characterizes with soft winter with positive average temperatures in January, while the summer is hot.
Aytos is the second biggest town in the region with population of about 25 000 people. It is located on the main road Sofia-Burgas.
There are many shops, restaurants, cafes, bank offices, night clubs, hotels which offer accomodation. The town comprises with two kindergartens, an elementary school, two high schools, a professional high school for agriculture, medical centres and a hospital. There is regular bus and railway transport to the whole country.
Aytos has rich history. It is situated on the place of an ancient settlement from the Neolith Age. Today, the finds of theThracian settlemtn Akvileya and the fortress Aetos / which existed during the Middieval Age/ can be seen in the city museum. The fortess Aetos palyed an improtant role in the defence system of the Bulgarian against the attacts of Tartars, Avars and Crusaders.
